the last ouzo – a crime novel by Hanna von Feilitzsch
The last Ouzo is about the Greek inspector Christína Strátou. Her husband Níkos goes to Saudi Arabia for several years for professional reasons and Christína decides that she wants to work in Greece. In Athens, she still has a job with the homicide squad. Unfortunately, it is currently occupied, so she is sent to Páros.
When she arrives on the Cycladic island, she expects a few quiet months. But that’s all over when she finds the body of a young woman on a hike. Her colleagues are quick to point the finger at her husband Dragos as the culprit. Her boss – his name is Fánis – doesn’t just make her life difficult. He virtually blocks her investigations and tries to stop her from carrying out her investigations with nonsensical assignments.
Christína believes Dragos is innocent. But this becomes increasingly difficult as time goes on, as there is simply too much incriminating evidence. This forces Christína to question her own gut feeling. She does this professionally, without losing sight of other lines of investigation.
There are some quite unexpected twists and turns in this crime thriller. The reader always remains on the side of the dedicated investigator. She holds several loose threads in her hand and doesn’t even know whether they are connected or not.
Then Christína comes up with the idea of seeking advice from her former boss Bábis Pantaléos. This happens roughly in the middle of the thriller and catalyzes the investigation. Could the culprit be a well-known patron? Or is it Dragos after all? And how do other dead bodies fit into the picture?
a car accident leads to the solution of the case
A car accident later confirms Christína’s opinion that Dragos is the wrong lead. She arrives at the scene of the accident with her boss Fánis. Even though her police colleagues are already at the scene and have secured all the evidence, Christína wants to form her own opinion. She finds traces on the car that prove it has been tampered with. The driver was supposed to have been murdered. Even Fánis, who didn’t want to know anything about this kind of evidence, now pays tribute to his colleague.
Then it goes on and on. Connections emerge, and finally everything comes together to form a coherent overall picture. Of course, there is also an exciting finale. Justice is served and the criminal justice system can take action. Everything ends well: The bad guys go to jail and the good guys toast with an ouzo.
